We Spent 3 Weeks Testing 24 Vacuum Cleaners to Find the Best One For Your Home in 2026

Dusty floors, stubborn pet hair, and bulky machines that never quite reach into the corners: keeping your home clean shouldn't feel like a chore. A good vacuum cleaner should be powerful, easy to maneuver, and smart enough to handle everyday messes without constant attention.

But not all vacuum cleaners live up to their claims.

Some lose suction quickly, clog up fast, or weigh a ton. Others don't last long, spread dirt instead of picking it up, or are frustrating to empty and maintain.

We tested 24 vacuum cleaners, including popular picks from Osmo, Shark, Samsung, Dyson, and Henry. The top five were ranked based on the following criteria:

Suction Power & Cleaning Performance
We tested each vacuum on hardwood, carpet, and tile, measuring pickup of dust, dirt, and pet hair — both in a single pass and over time.

Ease of Use
From setup to daily cleaning, we evaluated controls, maneuverability, bin emptying, and how intuitive each model felt in hand.

Design & Portability
We assessed weight, balance, corded vs. battery operation, and how easily each vacuum handled tight spaces and furniture edges.

Battery Life or Cord Management
For cordless models, we tracked runtime and recharge speed. For corded models, we evaluated reach, retraction, and how easy it was to avoid tangles.

Noise & Maintenance
A good vacuum should be quiet enough for daily use and easy to clean. We looked at filter access, dustbin design, and noise levels across all settings.

After weeks of testing in real homes with real messes, these are the 5 vacuum cleaners we'd actually buy and use every week.

If long battery life is your priority, look no further than this premium vacuum cleaner — it ran for 37 minutes across various surfaces and speeds before running out. The high cleaning performance score came from picking up nearly 100 percent of the dirt we spilled on carpet, laminate, and floorboards. Pet hair was also gone in a single pass.

It was comfortable to maneuver, although the large head made it tricky to use on stairs. Switching between accessories — including a crevice tool and pet brush — was easy, as they all clicked in seamlessly. It also folds in half for easy storage.

We found it noisy in use and it takes four hours to charge. However, two batteries are included, allowing for extended cleaning sessions.

If you don't have space to store your vacuum in a closet, this sleek design would look great out in the open. It glided over all surfaces and picked up 96 percent of the dust during testing. It also removed all cookie crumbs and pet hair with ease. On stairs, it reached into all corners and was generally effortless to use.

Charging takes only two hours, but the battery life — two hours included — varied during use: at varying speeds and surfaces it lasted 19 minutes, while on the lowest setting it lasted over an hour. The digital battery display keeps you informed, though.

You can easily empty the contents with one push of a button into the included 2L docking station, and the thin, long extension nozzle easily reaches tricky spots. It's expensive, but innovative.

This vacuum scored the highest marks across the board for its suction power on both carpet and hard floors. It's lightweight and easy to handle, both as a stick vacuum and handheld, and even removes embedded pet hair in a single pass.

While the suction power is impressive, it is pricey, and it's important to know that on the maximum setting it lasts just over eight minutes before needing a 3.5-hour charge. On the lower setting, however, it lasts much longer.

This product from Numatic, debuting its signature smiley face on stick vacuums for the first time, impressed during testing. It's agile to use, felt well-balanced and light, and glided effortlessly over every surface we tried it on. It also comes with an extra, roomier handle.

Surprisingly for a stick vacuum, this one uses a dust bag, and we found that the bag captured all the dust effectively. It also comes with plenty of spare parts. The suction power was excellent — on carpet and when removing pet hair, it delivered top-tier performance. It only left traces on laminate floors, but still picked up 92 percent of the dust.

The battery lasted only 14 minutes on the Speed Boost setting, but when using different speeds on different surfaces, it held up for a respectable 34 minutes. It also charges quickly in two and a half hours.

Things To Consider WHEN CHOOSING THE BEST Vacuum Cleaner
Innovative technology
Innovative technology makes vacuum cleaners powerful and efficient, and usually much better than many older vacuums with outdated systems. Always look for modern technology, as it will become increasingly common in the future.
Extra brushes
The downside is that many brands push extra brushes on you for over $70, so try to find a good brand that offers them for free. These brushes each serve their own purpose and help you clean many different surfaces.
Multiple filtration layers
Filtration is a very important part of any vacuum cleaner, so multiple layers make it even more efficient. In my opinion, you should aim for at least four filter layers for healthier and fresher air in your home.
Powerful motor
Again, it all comes down to the motor's power if you want to vacuum effectively. A good motor typically runs at over 80,000 RPM, so always pay attention to the RPM rather than wattage.
Warranty
If the brand doesn't offer a money-back guarantee or warranty on their vacuum cleaners, you're better off staying away. Always look for something you can try out and get your money back in full if you don't find it useful.
What To Avoid When Choosing a Vacuum Cleaner
Heavy vacuum cleaners
To avoid sore arms or backs, it's best to steer clear of heavy vacuum cleaners that are hard to carry around and require more strength and effort. Always opt for lightweight alternatives.
No flexible steering
Cleaning corners or different surfaces requires flexible steering, and the best vacuum cleaners can rotate 180°. It also makes a vacuum much more durable because there's less chance of brushes breaking.
Cheap knockoffs
There are a ton of cheap products (even on Amazon) that are just pure junk. They haven't even been tested and will only waste your time and money. In my opinion, anything under $150 can't be functional.
